An unofficial alternative to the Gala Dinner

Postby g'nomi » Fri May 21, 2010 04:18 pm

Given that tickets for the Gala Dinner have now sold out and a waiting list is in operation(https://www.dwcon.org/news/view/26) I am wondering how many people are interested in an unofficial alternative?

At the moment I'm planning on booking a convention meal for the Sunday if I don't get through the Gala waiting list, and believe that many people will also find themselves gutted not to get a Gala Dinner ticket. So, how can we add a little pomp to our non-gala meal? How can we make it that little bit more special?

My own two useless ideas; A sort of anti-coronation 'event' perhaps held by the werewolves (dog bowls filled with ferro roche?) Or an Ankh-Morkian dwarve celebration? (they wouldnt have been able to return to the Uberwald region for the coronation) complete with bunting...

Other people have suggested a picnic, perhaps held alongside the rat race(?)

Anyone else have any further suggestions/advice/ideas or general enthusiasm for this?

I like the idea of the Uberwaldians ( dwarves, werewolves, vampire, etc.) not able to make it "home" for the big celebration to have a mini celebration. We could take over part of the restaurant area or where the rat racing is taking place. We could dress up, sing songs from the old country, tell tales from the the home land and of course,....dress up.

Thanks for the enthusiasm Mazzie :D
And thank you Glingle and elaineandtony :D

I'm so glad you like the ideas ~ and the 'songs from zee old country' ~ brillient!
I didn't have any great materplan in mind when I suggested that, I just thought 'bunting' and, you know a general Queen Elizabeth street party vibe...

Please keep you ideas coming in, I'm hoping to gain huge proof of popularity for the idea before presenting it elsewhere (facebook and livejournal in my case...)

damn... it might be better than the gala dinner. I suspect there will be much mixing later in the evening.

And it would be rude not to dress up :)

Suggestions, suggestions...well, if I get my keester in gear, I'm planning on making a 'From the Disk. With Love...' food basket type thing for the auction, using the recipes from Nanny Ogg's cookbook. SO, whilst I'm at it, and if people want/are willing to eat it, I'll make some of the dwarven cookery for this? I can make damn good edible dwarf bread...

Now I almost wish I hadn't got my gala ticket, haha! But I can't let a perfectly good gala dress go to waste 8) I may have to make a guest appearance at some point in the evening, for one gold song at least. And some dwarven bread.

Wow, some very ingenious plans afoot, I'm always impressed by the creativity of the Discworld fans.
a couple of things to consider. Foodwise I suggest emailing hotel@dwcon.org with some details of what you plan. They will need to check with the hotel about you bringing in your own food. I would imagine the might turn a blind eye to few nibbles shared between friends but are likely to quite unhappy if you start getting out picnic baskets.
It's a bit like turning up at your local pub, where they serve food, and sitting there eating something you have brought in from home.
You do need to get this checked before making plans as I'm just surmising based on previous experience- plus the hotel might have different guidelines now.

Also could whoever is organising please email gala@dwcon.org
We are also organising the rat race, although someone else will be running the event on the night and I know they have some ideas to flesh it all out and make it another great event. It would be helpful to liaise with them to ensure that everything fits seamlessly together.
The room will be quite busy anyway with Mr B performing, the coronation and then proceeding into the Rat Race so it will be best if we coordinate the happenings rather than have them fight with each other.

Please email the addresses given, PM's and messages on this thread are unlikely to be seen.

I thought we could just turn the sunday night dinner into an unofficial Gala Dinner. Singing and other "entertainment" could take place elsewhere.

Hehehe...I was going to bring food for myself (snacks 'n' nibbles) anyway, plus with working full time I won't be able to make an extraordinary amount of stuff. But if anyone has any requests from Nanny Oggs cookbook, I'll be happy to oblige them a nibble :P And also, who might I email about the possibility of a Food Basket type thing for the Auction?
