Can a good Jewish girl attend the Spring event?

Postby Librarian's Apprentice » Thu Feb 04, 2010 07:16 pm

Oook!

I was wondering if there's any sort of Kosher accomodations anywhere near, or preferably in, Wincanton? :?

Also, is there anyone else from Israel who's attending - I hate travelling alone!

Oook!

Food is a pretty major consideration, since even bread can be treif (non-Kosher food). Aside from that, I also can't drive or travel from one city to another during Saturday (until the sun goes down, when the Sabboth is over), so I'd prefer to be as close as possible. :)

Also, I'm not allowed to handle money or do anything mercantile - is there an entrance fee to these events? 'Cause if so, I may have to skip the first day entirely :(

No entrance fee, but I'm not sure if its possible to attend an event without putting your hand in your pocket  be interesting to see if it can be done.

there will be the Saturday evening meal, what this will be has not been announced yet so whether its suitable or not.... :?

Hmm - does handing your credit card over at the door and then collecting 'gifts' count 8-)
There's no travel as long as you arrive on Friday night, but accommodation should be booked early - the Bear would be the best for you
Food might be an issue, could you bring your own, eat it in your room while we have our Sausage supper - which, of course, is definitely NOT kosher - then join us for the fun and festivities later?
You could do all of your purchases on the Sunday, charge drinks to your room if you're at the Bear and settle on Sunday as you check out, not bid at the auction, not put any money in the charity pot until Sunday - it's all do-able but like everything else, when two 'religions' collide ... 8-)
You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm

Sorry to put a damper on your plans but you will be EXTREMELY lucky to find any accommodation in Wincanton and the Bear and the Dolphin - the two main pubs with accommodation are always booked up months if not years in advance!! So the travelling issue will probably be major.

Dont let that put you off though - you may get lucky, and someone may cancel -it happened last time at the last minute. I think bringing some of your own food is a good plan as we are very rural and there are not really any places that would sell Kosher food. Mostly I travel to bigger towns to buy our food and I live near Wincanton, it's just there is so little choice here. I just dont like Morrisons as a supermarket!! I wish we had a Waitrose

It might help if you could tell us what IS kosher.

Would you be allowed to eat certain foods and not others or do they have to be prepared in a kosher kitchen.
I was thinking if you could purchase and bring kosher ready meals, perhaps the pub would agree to heat them up.
Or could you bring your own supplies and have cold food? salad, meat, fruit etc?

There are two Indian restaurants in town and I understand that Kosher and Halal have similarities. Perhaps the Indian vegetarian food would work for you?

Your biggest problem is first trying to find accomodation. We none of us want to put you off but you do need somewhere to stay. You could certainly travel down from London on Berry's on the Friday and be there before sunset, so that would be OK.
As we journey through life, discarding baggage along the way, we should keep an iron grip, to the very end, on the capacity for silliness.

As far as I am aware neither Indian restaurant is Halal. The vegetairan options MIGHT work, but i suspect no-one in the restaurant would be able to tell you for certain. As was said earlier you best ,SAFEST bet would be to bring in your own cold food and eat it in your room.
